Who we are

Commuter Transport Engineering Durban (Pty) Ltd or CTE Durban  specializes in providing engineering services and solutions to the Railway Industry and other sectors that require spcialized engineering services. We are based in Edendale neigbouring iMbali in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu Natal.  CTE Durban was established in 2009 as a subsidiary of CTE Group’s national footprint. 


In 2021 however, CTE Durban was acquired by new owners and thus is no longer part of Commuter Transport Engineering Investment (Group). It  is a standalone company although the name was retained as Commuter Transport Engineering Durban (Pty) Ltd.

RAil sa

Techinical maintenance services

We provide technical maintenance services on rolling stock - specifically 10M5 motor coaches, 10M5 trailer coaches, electric and diesel locomotives, industrial power generators etc. Please contact us for more details.

body repair & painting 

We perform structural works, surface preparation and restoration, grit blasting and paintwork on various parts and components. 

overhaul of rollingstock

We perform complete overhaul or complete refurbishment of various types of coaches and locomotives for both private and public entities. Other services are dependent on the client's scope..

engineering services

We have a fully fledged engineering workshop that can handle fasterner manufacturing, CNC machining, 3 axis CNC turning, precision fabrication among othe rspecialized services. We also provide services in hydraulic systems.

We have a team of highly skilled, experienced and trade tested technicians that can attend to your elecrical (domestic & industrial), plumbing, carpentry, structural, welding, paint and others. Please reach out via the form and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

The organization has undergone substantial upgrades to its manufacturing and production facilities as well as the expansion of its existing infrastructure. It has a staff compliment of around 153, (25% females and 75% males), and over 40% of these are youths.

As a Service Provider, we encourage you to use the form below to update your details. Our Procurement teams are currently in the process of updating our Supplier Database. If you do not receive an acknowledgement of receipt, please contact the Finance or Procurement Supervisor whose details are provided below.

- Refurbishment of traction motors, compressors, exhausters, etc., compatible with 10M5s, 18Es, and D35 & D36 (as per specs)

- Equipment calibration and certification
- Consumables for plumbing, electrical fittings, carpentry, paintwork, and office supplies, among others.

    • List of components/services supplied
    • PRASA Accreditation to supply/service these specific components
    • Quality Control [your inspection, testing, and certification processes/procedures to ensure zero faults]
    • Provision of Technical Documentation regarding specs, work done, etc. (Data Pack) timeously
    • Lead Time (records or proof of timely delivery)
    • Price (Provide a competitive market price inclusive of VAT) and whether it includes DELIVERY or not.
    • Pricing Terms & Conditions
    • Compliance (SHEQ and industry-specific standards)
    • Accreditation - e.g. ISO or any other recognized entity in South Africa.
    • Warranty/Guarantee and after Sales Support (TAT, responsiveness to a reported fault or query)
    • Continuous Improvement Plan
    • References of current activities similar to the components/services you wish to offer to CTE Durban.
